Food to Avoid When Pregnant

If you are looking for information on what food to avoid when pregnant, this is the article for you. This article will discuss the main foods you must not eat when you are pregnant. These are: raw eggs, some meat, fish, some dairy produce, and caffeine and alcohol.

Raw Eggs

Raw or undercooked eggs are bad because they can contain salmonella. This means you should stay clear of mousse, ice cream, and mayonnaise from delis or restaurants because these sometimes have raw egg in them. When cooking eggs, make sure they are cooked until they are firm all the way through.

Meat

Liver should be avoided by all pregnant women. Most other fresh meats okay for pregnant women to eat, as long as it is cooked all the way through so that there are no pink bits in it. You’re also best staying away from ready meals and barbequed meat.

Also bad are cured meats, which include Parma ham and salami, as these can cause toxoplasmosis and listeriosis. Pates, even vegetarian ones, can also contain listeria.

Fish

You may have heard that oily fish is good for you because of the omega 3 content. While this is indeed true, some fish can have environmental pollutants in them. It is best to eat oily fish a maximum of twice per week.

Shellfish should also be avoided due to the risk of food poisoning. Other fish to stay away from are marling, swordfish, tuna and shark, as these all contain mercury.

Dairy Produce

Some dairy products can cause a problem for pregnant women. For example, unpasteurised milk and dairy products can contain bacteria that can give you food poisoning. Stay away from unpasteurised soft cheese, such as those made from sheep or goat milk. Also don’t eat any cheese if it has a white, mouldy rind on it. Examples of this are brie and camembert. Cheese with blue-veins should be avoided too. These all have the risk of containing listeria which can damage your baby.

Caffeine

Yes, you may feel the desperate need for a caffeine boost while you are experiencing the lack of energy which comes with being pregnant. If you do drink caffeinated beverages, make sure you consume less than 200mg, which is about 2 cups of coffee or two mugs of tea. This is because too much caffeine can lead to miscarriage or low birth weight.

Alcohol

This one is really a no-brainer. Everyone knows too much alcohol is bad for you, so definitely don’t go getting drunk while you are carrying an unborn child inside you. If you do drink any alcohol, make sure it is no more than one or two units a maximum of twice per week. Ideally though, it is best to avoid alcohol altogether.

So, those are the main foods to avoid when pregnant. If you want to make sure you give birth to a healthy baby, the things to avoid are fish, liver, cured and undercooked meats, unpasteurised dairy products, raw or undercooked eggs, caffeine and alcohol. If you avoid all of those and eat a healthy diet rich in plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, you have the best chance of having a healthy child.
